It is with immeasurable sadness that all here at The Old Vic learn of the passing of Glenda Jackson.

She first performed at The Old Vic in 1975 in The White Devil, again in 1984 in Phedra and, unforgettably, in 2016 in King Lear, where we were lucky enough to host her triumphant return to the stage after a 25-year hiatus.

Glenda continued to support us throughout our bicentenary celebrations as a bicentenary ambassador.

It’s extraordinary, is it not, that a group of strangers comes in quite by chance, sits down in the dark, and another group of strangers come on in the light, and somehow there is an energy that goes from the light to the dark? And that, when it works, is reinforced and sent back. Hopefully, a perfect circle is created’
