HIS ROYAL HIGHNESS THE PRINCE PHILIP, DUKE OF EDINBURGH
Today we are deeply saddened to learn of the death of His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.
He visited The Old Vic on 6 May in 1952 with The Queen to attend the Royal Gala performance of King Henry VIII and returned in March 1958 where he joined The Queen to mark the opening of a new annex, which is now the National Theatre Studios. There they were entertained by a private performance of scenes from Shakespeare, including Paul Rogers as Falstaff in Henry IV Part II, John Neville in Hamlet, Barbara Jefford and Keith Michell in The Taming of the Shrew, and Moira Shearer and Frankie Howard in A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
Through the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Prince Philip helped to transform the lives of countless young people, nurturing budding artists, performers and theatre makers alongside the many other skills that the Award encompasses.
Our thoughts are with The Queen, our Bicentenary Patron, His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales and the Royal Family at this time.
